Green Card Renewal

A green card is normally a proof of permanent residence in the United States for an unlimited period. It is officially called an I-551. It is a proof to help you live and work anywhere in the United States. Most green cards that are now issued come without an expiration date; however, the old green cards do have expiration dates and should be renewed.

Form I-90 is applicable to have your renewal processed.
Form I-751 is applicable to have the conditions on I-551 removed

When should I apply for a green card renewal?
If you were issued with a green card on conditional grounds, you might have to seek renewal to have a green card replaced without any conditions on it. This can be applied for only if you have fulfilled the requirements to have the conditions removed.
If you were issued a green card that is valid for people under14 years of age, you need to apply for green card renewal to get a green card that is valid for people over 18 years of age.
If you were issued with a green card that is valid for 10 years with an expiration date you need to apply for a renewal to get a green card that is valid without an expiration date on it.

Though the green card is valid for an indefinite period there are possibilities that a green card renewal could be refused when you apply for it:-
If the green card was issued on conditional grounds and you did not fulfill the requirements of the condition. For example, a green card by marriage,
the marriage should have been workable for a minimum period. If the marriage happens to end much earlier, then the USCIS has the right to refuse renewal with the marriage having ended.
For a green card by investment, it should have been that the business in which one is investing the money should be fairly profitable for the American work pool. If the green card investor has not performed to the basic minimum set by the USCIS visa norms then the USCIS has the right to refuse renewal with the business being unfruitful.
Green card renewal can be refused if the resident traveled overseas for more than the stipulated time without filing a time extension parole.
Green card cancellation and refusal for renewal can also be due to criminal conviction charges or the discovery of false proceedings to get a green card when it was initially sanctioned.
