A valid green card should always be carried by every permanent resident in order to produce to officials for verification whenever required. An invalid green card should be replaced by a valid one.
Several of the reasons to apply for a green card replacement include:
Change of name: If the green card holder changes their name due to marriage or due to some other reason then the change should be registered with the USCIS and a green card replacement should be filed for.
Change of address: If the green card holder happens to move within the united states then the change of address should be reported and a green card replacement should be sought.
Renewal of old cards with expiration date: If the green card is reaching its 10 year expirqtion date then it should be renewed or if the green card has been issued when the applicant was under 15 years of age then a green card replacement should also be sought. However, if the green card does not have an expiration date replacement is not mandated unless other causes for replacing like applies, such as anem change or loss.
Remove conditional status: If the green card was originally issued with a conditional status then when the condition has been fulfilled and it is eligible to be removed, then a green card replacement should be sought.
Green card not received after application and interview: Sometimes it so happens that the green card would not reach the recipient even after the USCIS has sanctioned one. When this occurs, a green card replacement application should be made.
Green Card Replacement request should be sent to the USCIS if the card has been lost, mutilated, expired or damaged or if the writing or details on the card become illegible.
Normally, a green card replacement application can be made personally or with the assistance of an attorney or immigration agent; however, doing it yourself can save you some money. Filing for a green card replacement can be done individually if caution is taken to fill in the application form following the guidelines given by the USCIS.
The green card replacement can be filed by using the form I-90. If the I-90 is approved the USCIS will send a replacement I-551 or a new green card.
